The Altairian Dollar is a cryptocurrency and the principal medium of exchange throughout the Milky Way galaxy, which is partly due to the general incompatibility with other forms of state-sponsored currencies of mostly illusory nature. The Altairian Dollar has held it's value throughout the ages.
The pan-dimensional being Satoshi Nakamoto is widely considered the inventor and first creator of all current and local variants. His initial whitepaper can be found here and could prove an inspiring read.

The actual value of the Altarian Dollar is rather hard to determine. Some may say that something like 30 Altairian Dollars should get you through the day quite comfortably in most places throughout the Milky Way galaxy. Whilst others will warn that this amount would not even be enough to defer a Vogon captain from reading his poetry at you, even when paid in full. Which of course should be avoided at ANY expense.

Legend is vaguely more specific about the value of the original Altairian Dollar. It is told that the value of the earliest Altairian Dollars was related to an exceptionally large mass of gold of planet-size proportions, which Altairians disguised by a fathoms thick layer of pure "inconspicuous, and cheap to come by" cristaline carbon, and was purposed to be put in orbit around a very very distant star. Which was deemed a particularly clever idea at the time.
However, the unfortunate crew of the aptly named "Hyper-Galactic Spaceship" hyper-galactic spaceship responsible for implementing this cunning plan was tragically and forever lost in deep space. Their final and rather mystifying transmission is said to be "The food was terrible anyway.."

Most hitchhikers now consider the value of the Altairian Dollar relative to their presumed location in the Milky Way galaxy, which is usually as far from any Vogon trading-, mining-, demolition-, or cargo vessel as one can possibly get. Though this may prove a daunting enterprise for even the most experienced hitchhiker.
This is probably one of the reasons why visits to mothers-in-law are usually deferred as long as possile throughout the Milky Way galaxy, as was recently postulated by distinguished illuminati of the rather infamous "Pan-Galactic Councel Of Anthropology Excluding Those Boring You-Know-Who Primates."

Aquiring Altairian Dollars is usually done by exchanging them for a more or less suitable local currency unit.
Of course this will expand the Galactic Altairian network as a whole, and further the immutable ledger of the Altairian Dollar. Which in turn is considered an indication of a civilzation's civilizedness.

There is a way where Altairian Dollars could be created en masse. This generally involves solving so called hashes by a fairly enormous computer, and access to the energy resource of a small planetary civilization. This however will make a lot of people very angry, and is widely regarded as a bad move.

On planet Earth (Sol) this strikingly has gotten slightly out of hand.. Just one energy-gulping computer, designed for this sole purpose, within colossal arrays of similarly energy-gulping computers, solves one hash, and by doing so renders the invested energy of all competing computers, trying to do the very same thing, totally void.. Which amounts to evaporating close to 99.999% of all energy invested. Which should have made many people very angry, and regarded upon as a rather misconstrued endeavor.

Don't panic!

Hitchhikers though can create Altairian Dollars by using an ancient internal "mining" mechanism left in place by the Altair Core developers, or the dedicated Altair Core 64 bit CPU miner. Both of which can be downloaded here. This "act of creation" is by and large considered economically viable, and an altogether cool thing to participate in.
